The Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) has added 16 new certified Sports Administrators into the national grid of Sport Associations/Federations after those persons completed the course last weekend at Olympic House.
One of the participants in the Guyana Olympic Association Sport Administrators’ course collects his certificate from Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr Frank Anthony (right) Sunday night at Olympic House.
The Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Dr. Frank Anthony presented the participants with their certificates on Sunday where he challenged the new administrators to go back to their respective disciplines and impart the new found knowledge.
Anthony spoke of several ideas of changes he would like to see made and new areas that could be undertaken at the Sports Associations/Federations level. He said that the time has come for sports to become a “sector” just as the “rice manufacturing” sector.
The certification of the Sports Administrators followed the staging of GOA’s sport administrator course, which the Olympic Solidarity sponsors. The course lasted four days.
The course dealt with such topics as: the history of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the Role of Olympic Solidarity, Women in Sports, Budgeting, Volunteerism, Conducting Meetings, Governance of a Sports Organisation, Sport and The Environment, Drugs and Doping in Sports, Combining Education and Sports, Sport for All, Sport and the Law.
In addition, the participants had a panel discussion on the topic: “The Role that the Government, the Olympic Association and Sports Associations should play in the support of Elite Athletes”.
The presenters on the Panel Discussion were: GOA President, Juman Yassin, Director of Sport, Neil Kumar, Chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission, Dr. Steve Surujbally and Stabroek Sport Editor, Donald Duff.
Some of the lecturers on the 2010 programme included GOA General Secretary, Ivor O’Brien, Dr. Karen Pilgrim, Hector Edwards, Noel Adonis, Justice Roxanne George, Emily Dodson, Christopher Nascimento and Mayfield Taylor-Trim.
