Dear Sir,
It is with a heavy heart that I write this letter to the media because as a long standing Sports Administrator, I fully understand the conditions that sports leaders in Guyana operated under.
Few are able to overcome the obstacles and be successful but sadly the majority simply sits back, does nothing and just seemed to enjoy the benefits of the office especially travelling overseas.
As Secretary/CEO of Guyana’s leading Youth & Sports Club, the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club, my greatest moments came from seeing the club transformed the lives of thousands of youths every single year viz our numerous programmes and projects.
We have achieved every single goal we have set ourselves, but each year we strive to better ourselves because we do not believe in looking back at past success but rather to contribute more to making God’s world a better place for all of us especially youths to live in.
The unique part of the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club is that we undertake over 100 programmes every year, but as a matter of policy we strive to come up with one new idea per month and then work our butts off to transform the idea into reality. This results in twelve new programmes per year and this is what kept us on top of the field.
Mr. Editor, four years ago at the urging of the Guyana Cricket Board, the club formed a Female Cricket Team in response to call for the development of the game among the fairer sex.
The Club has invested a fair amount of its finances into developing the Female Team which is now the defending National Female champions and has produced three West Indies players, five national senior players, four junior national players and a total of 17 for Berbice at all levels. The girls on a daily basis and at great expense practice at the Area “H” Ground.
The point of this letter, Mr. Editor is the total lack of interest of the Guyana Cricket Board in the development of female cricket in Guyana. 2010 has just one more month to go and yet the Annual Inter-club Female National Tournament has not seen the light of the day.
The Guyana Cricket board fixtures for the year states that the tournament was scheduled for October/November with the finals scheduled for Sunday 5th December. True to tradition, it has remained just ink on paper and with no club tournament being played, one is left to wonder, are we really committed to the development of female cricket.
Why in God’s name must a club continue to invest heavily into female cricket and why must the girls continue to practice when there is nothing to play.
The Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club has been forced to organise specially arranged matches for our teams and to keep players like Shemaine Campbelle fit and ready to represent the West Indies.
The Guyana Cricket Board needs to get its act in order and the persons responsible for female cricket in Guyana should do the honourable thing and step aside and hopefully someone would rise to the challenge.
The funny thing is that despite the total lack of interest by the Guyana Cricket Board, we now have four Guyanese girls on the West Indies Female Team and this is because of the sheer hard work and commitment by a few local clubs officials.
Are we so blind that we cannot see that the female cricketers are making us more proud by their performances on the field and unlike male cricketers in the West Indies are not affected by the urge for financial rewards? Surely they have performed far better than their male counterparts, and then one is forced to ask the question why we are not assisting them to excel even more. I surely hope not, that the answer lies in the belief in some males, that female cricket is a distraction.
Mr. Editor, this is an urgent call to the Guyana Cricket Board, for them to wake up and fulfill their mandate for female cricket. Let us have the 2010 female national championship and let us see our best players in action.
The time has surely come for our executives to stop plotting to see who would be the new executives in 2011. If you cannot fulfill your mandate in 2010, I strongly doubt that you could next year. Leadership is best measured by the work done and not by promises in the future.
For 2010 alone, the Female Under-19 Inter-county was called off for no reason, the Senior Inter-county was a mockery of the highest class as it was played in the absence of our best players and now there is no Inter-club tournament. To make matters worse, the national female championship for 2009 just received a trophy with no financial prizes to inspire the girls.
The Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club is willing to assist the Guyana Cricket Board to get the ball rolling as the future of many promising girls are at stake.

Secretary/CEO,
