Suriname’s leading volleyball club Lyzecks produced a masterclass performance against Guyana’s No.1 club Young Achievers to capture the Digicel and John Fernandes Ltd sponsored Goodwill Series which was played on Saturday evening at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
The visitors played unbeaten in the day’s competition which also involved Castrol Strikers and GuySuCo Training Centre to underline the difference in standard between the two countries in the sport.
Lyzecks which recently finished runners-up in the Caribbean Tournament that was hosted by Suriname defeated the previously unbeaten Young Achievers 25-19, 25-16 to claim the Digicel Trophy, while the later also received a trophy donated by the telecommunication Company.
In what could be deemed as a major upset, the youthful GuySuCo Training Centre came from behind to beat a clearly unfocused Castrol Strikers in three sets to finish third, a result that will surely boost the up and coming stars.
In the day’s other results: Castrol Strikers lost to Lyzecks 13-15, 14-16; Young Achievers beat GTC 15-13, 15-6; GTC went down to Lyzecks 10-15, 10-15; Young Achievers eased past Castrol Strikers 17-15, 7-15, 15-6 and GTC defeated Castrol Strikers 13-15, 15-13, 15-5.
In the feature clash, Lyzecks got off to a solid start and assumed a 5-2 lead, before the local champions began to assert themselves with Captain Randy Adams taking control with some thunderbolt spikes and effective blocking.
However, the Surinamese still clung to an important 8-6 advantage through a wonderful exhibition of setting from Marciano DeKam supported by excellent spiking from Giovanni Lin Tsung and Yuri Makaising and they were able to keep a handy lead right through the set, at one stage led by as much as five points, 22-17.
For the first time in a long time, Achievers seemed to have no answer to the Dutch onslaught and this was due to deKam’s ability to disguise his setting and they easily ran away to claim the opening stanza.
The second set begun in identical fashion as the first as the guests once again went on the offensive with Terence Wirjo and Lin Tsung combining to create havoc for the Guyanese and they reeled off four straight points to take a 16-12 lead and the championship trophy firmly in their sights.
All this time, the big trio of Adams Christopher Ramsundar and setter Khemraj Singh were reduced to mere onlookers as the Dutch juggernaut completely dominated proceedings, stretching their advantage to six points at one stage, 19-13, before going on to win the match and title.
President of the Guyana Volleyball Federation Lenox Shuffler in his remarks said he hoped that the visitors had enjoyed the competition and is looking forward to more interaction between the two countries both at the club and national levels.
Digicel’s Sales Manager Dwayne Scott, who made the presentation of trophies to the two teams disclosed that he was pleased with the level of competition exhibited, adding that the Company’s involvement in the sport has just begun.
“We have a proud record of support for sports across this country and I can assure you that we will continue to be involved in the development of sports, while our support for volleyball will continue,” Scott said.
The teams were also involved in Beach Volleyball at the Splashmin’s Resort yesterday, while the Surinamese are expected to return today.
