Magistrate Geeta Chandan-Edmond yesterday further adjourned the matter of witness tampering involving embattled television station owner Chandra Narine Sharma and his five associates. The new date is December 3.
The matter was adjourned for the Magistrate to rule on the submissions of the two counsels.
One of the witnesses in the matter was called to testify at yesterday’s hearing and was cross examined by state prosecutor Sanjeev Datadin.
Attorney at law Mark Waldron appeared on behalf of Mark Reid, who is one of Sharma’s associates charged with the same offence.
Mark Reid was also question by Waldron.
On November 24 the matter was postponed for a report on the Constitutional motion which was filed in the high court against the Attorney General.
Sharma, his son-in-law Ravi Mangar, Tyrone Ali, Mark Reid, Raywattie Ramsaywack and Doodnauth have all been charged with obstruction of justice.
That charge arose from the previous allegation of carnal knowledge of a girl under the age of 12. Sharma is also facing this charge.
This charge reads that Sharma willfully attempted to obstruct the course of justice by removing two of the girls at the centre of the allegations against him from their known address and taking them to a house at Golden Grove, East Bank Demerara, in order to prevent them from being questioned by the police in relation to the allegations.
Sharma’s case began in April before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson who refused him bail on the carnal knowledge charge. After being denied bail he collapsed in the prisoners’ chute and had to be rushed to hospital. His lawyer, Vic Puran, at the time stated that the prosecution was opposing bail on the grounds of tampering with the witnesses.
