Loving, caring and ambitious were the words used to describe Margaret Hamilton who celebrated her 101st birthday yesterday.
Born in 1909, Mrs. Hamilton dedicated her time and energies towards the “quite, successful and admirable” upbringing of her ten children.
The centenarian, up to last year, was quite active. “My mother baked, cooked and cleaned up after, all without aid,” said her daughter, Verly Hamilton, who now takes care of her. Unfortunately, a little after her last birthday she had a mild stroke, her daughter said.
Described as the woman who always likes doing for others, the centenarian’s immobility is causing her much discomfort, her daughter said. Nevertheless, she was well able to say “I am happy”.
Hamilton, who reads without spectacles, said that she is thankful for life. Her present forms of recreations are; reading (bible and newspapers) and enjoying the view from her front window.
During her younger years, Mrs. Hamilton played the piano. She enjoyed sewing and lending a helping hand to all those in need.
Quite a fashion statement, she was. This was evident in the wide range of fashionable hats displayed in her home.
In 1982, Mrs. Hamilton’s husband died. She however, “continued going strong” and stayed unmarried from then on.
An acrostic done by the younger generation suggested the meaning of her name to be Mother to all, Angelic, her smile can melt a heart of ice, Regal, she is in her carriage and her stance, Goodness gracious, she’s oh, so nice, Attractive, for a hundred years and ever after, Right, she always is, Electric is her infectious laughter, Truth, is what she always gives.
As opposed to last year when there was a big celebration with one son coming from as far as Germany, this year was quiet.
