– win male and female basketball and volleyball
Suriname completely dominated the second stage of the Inter-Guiana Games (IGG), which climaxed last night when Guyana’s strongest hope for national pride, its junior national basketball team, also went under to the Surinamese.
Suriname, who earlier in the three day competition had won the female basketball competition, the female volleyball competition and the male volleyball competition, closed their campaign in 2010 with a 74-70 points win against Guyana in male basketball.
It was the second consecutive year Suriname won the male basketball title that Guyana had consistently won over the years. Suriname had also won the basketball title last year when they played Guyana in a final after both teams defeated French Guiana.
Jean-Claud Smith scored 21 points for Suriname while Floyd Anches and Leandro Dongo both had 14 points each with Earvin Ramdanie adding 11 points. Guyana led the first quarter 13-4 and 29-25 at halftime before Suriname took over the game.
Richard Mohandatt scored 19 points for Guyana while Akeem Kanhai, who was the eventual MVP for male basketball, scored 17 points. Dave Plass added 16 points for the Guyanese, who trailed 42-45 after the third period before losing the game.
