On November 10, last, the first one-day retreat for the 35 staff members attached to the Bursary was held at the Ocean View International Hotel. The theme of the retreat was “Together we grow” symbolizing the way forward for the working of the University of Guyana’s Bursary.
The tone of the retreat was set by the Bursar, John Seeram, who focused on how the work should be done to consistently accomplish timely and accurate information for decision making.
He encouraged staff members to freely express themselves so that maximum benefit can be derived from the retreat and challenged them to aspire for excellence.
Mr. Seeram congratulated the staff for a job well done and for their invaluable contribution which led to the Audited Financial Statement for the year 2009-2010 being completed within three months. He also encouraged staff to perform at a higher level so that for 2010-2011 that position can be further improved.
Mr. Seeram said that there is equal opportunity for junior staff to improve their accounting capabilities while senior staff can enhance their managerial expertise.
The other presenters were Neil Browman, Chief Accountant; Hazel Patrick-Bentinck, Senior Accountant; Mrs. Juliet George, Accountant; and Andrew Hicks, Senior Lecturer within the Faculty of Social Sciences. All dealt with areas for improvement and pointed out where as a unit some areas were either neglected or little emphasis was being placed. The importance of the internal and external customer was stressed to convey communication skills that can be used in providing service to the students and other University staffers.
The Bursary’s performance and teamwork were examined alongside its pitfalls and reflected that additional formal and informal training coupled with rotation of staff were essential in some cases to further enhance its efficiency.
This was brought out by the presenters and later through the participants from group assignments. Staff morale and motivation were seen as key factors for improving on the job performance and for retention of staff at the Bursary.
Feedback received suggested that the retreat was indeed timely. Immediate implementation of systems and best practices were promised and staff left with a feeling of anticipation for a better working environment.
