Twenty-seven year old Royston Crandon produced a masterful 117 and shared in a century partnership with ‘Keeper Anthony Bramble (52) to spearhead Berbice to a massive 369-8 against the Rest Team on the opening day of the GCB senior 4-day cricket competition at Blairmount yesterday.
Watched by a spattering of spectators, former West Indies Test left-hander Sewnarine Chattergoon (87) and national limited overs opener Richard Ramdeen (50) built a solid 128-run foundation for Berbice, sponsored by GT&T’s Cellink.
Crandon then stroked 10 fours and 6 sixes from 124 balls and 165 minutes in his 3rd century at this level with an array of scintillating shots.
Crandon and Bramble, who joined him at 213-5 just before Tea, dominated the final session before medium pacer Kellon Carmichael (3-43) gained LBW verdicts against the Crandon brothers and Bramble in the space of 7 runs just before the close to keep the visitors in the fight.
Off-spinner Krisendat Ramoo had earlier removed the first three batsmen to finish with 3-80 from 32 overs.
Berbice, using a 17-man squad after the late inclusion of the West Indies ‘A’ team four-day players Assad Fudadin and Veerasammy Permaul, won the toss and elected to bat first on a slow pitch which is expected to deteriorate over the course of the match.
Chattergoon played with level-headed assurance in sweltering heat after 54 minutes were lost due to rain in the opening session and by Lunch the champions for the last five years had reached 71 without loss with Chattergoon on 40 and Ramdeen on 29.
After the interval both batsmen reached their fifties before Ramdeen, who hit 8 fours in his 89-ball and 111-minute 50 in his 2nd match at this level, was taken at mid-on, as off-spinner Krisendat Ramoo made the break through at 128-4.
Narsingh Deonarine, one of four players with West Indies senior team experience in the side, joined Chattergoon to take the score to 153 before Ramoo held a sharp, low return catch to dismiss Chattergoon.
Chattergoon, who scored a century against Demerara in last year’s 50-overs Inter-County competition, faced 103 balls, batted for 131 minutes and his entertaining 87 was decorated with 11 fours and a six.
National player Dion Ferrier, one of the leading All-Rounders in Demerara cricket, then removed Fudadin (4) with a perfect arm-ball from ’round’ the wicket. The left-hander, who along with Brandon Bess and Permaul will leave on Monday for next Thursday’s first ‘A’ team Test against Pakistan, played no shot as the ball clipped his off bail to leave the score on 160-3.
Ferrier, surprisingly not selected for Demerara despite scoring hundreds and claiming five-wicket hauls in the GCA two-day competition, was again in the action at 166-4 when he dived to his left at point to hold a stupendous catch as Deonarine (22) cut a short ball from Ramoo.
Eighteen-year-old debutant left-arm spinner Raj Nanan struck when Devon Clements (14) edged a drive to West Indies ‘A’ T20 player Jonathon Foo at slip.
At 213-5, Bramble joined Royston Crandon who played a solitary ODI game in South Africa last year and the pair steadied the ship with attractive batting.
The right-handed Crandon was quick to pounce on the bad balls and favoured the back foot punches through the cover region. He pulled Ramoo for six after depositing Nanan for a straight hit over the commentator’s booth.
The Rose Hall Town batsman, the only man to offer meaningful resistance when the Leeward Islands knocked Guyana out of last month’s Regional One-Day tournament in Jamaica, was dropped at silly mid-off on 24 off Nanan and responded with a scorching extra cover boundary next ball, before reaching his 50 from 81 balls and 89 minutes.
After Tea, taken at 217-5, Crandon exploded with three consecutives sixes off Ferrier in an action-packed over in which the 300 was posted.
Bramble, who struggled badly with the gloves in Jamaica, again showed excellent batting temperament as he and the fluent Crandon increased their 6th wicket partnership against a more steady than destructive bowling attack.
Former National under-19 pacer Kayron Fraser was brought back in the last hour’s play and Crandon reached his 2nd ton at this level from 113 balls with 7 fours and 5 sixes while Bramble, in his 2nd game at this level soon reached his fifty.
Carmichael finally ended the 146-run partnership when Crandon was trapped LBW to a cleverly disguised slower ball to leave Berbice on 359-6.
Carmichael also trapped Esuan Crandon LBW for 3 and Bramble seemed a bit unfortunate, as Berbice slipped to 366-7. Bramble’s 52 lasted 104 balls, 129 minutes and included 4 fours.
Permaul (3) and Steven Latcha (0) remained unbeaten when bails were lifted with the home team large and in charge in their own backyard.
Play on the 2nd day is scheduled to commence at 09:30 today.
