Singh rides home alone, again
District Nine, Rupununi’s, Doretta Wilson destroyed double CARIFTA Games gold medallist, Jevina Straker on the road yesterday in the female 10km run when the 50th National Schools’ Championships commenced on CARIFESTA Avenue.
Wilson made light work of East Georgetown’s Straker (44:16.23), leading from the start of the race to finish in 41:24.26 while West Coast Berbice’s, Onecia Bacchus (44:31.78) was third as the Track and Field competition officially heated up.
As the surprises continued, Nathanie Giddings, whose stellar performance in the first leg of the South American 10km Road Race landed him a place on the national team for the Suriname leg last month, slipped to third in the male 10km road run.
Representing Upper Demerara, Giddings had left the pack with Rupununi’s Daniel Felix before the trail pack reeled them in. Felix subsequently collapsed and the race was down to East Coast Demerara’s Chavez Sital, Quinn George and Giddings.
George from the West Coast of Berbice, District Five, seized his opportunity toward the finish after Giddings was dropped. George outran Sital in 34:24.65 while Sital finished in 34:36.40 as Giddings (36:56.12) came in third early yesterday morning.
Meanwhile, in the Cycling Championships, Naomi Singh took revenge for her loss to Marica Dick last year when she won the female 20km race. The two national cyclists have had a series of prior duels, but it was Singh who reigned on the road.
East Coast Demerara’s, Singh won the race in 1:33.29 while New Amsterdam’s Dick was second in 1:34.31 with Corentyne’s Crystal Lambert second with 1:34.32. Singh’s victory meant that she has now won this event four of the last five times.
South Georgetown’s Paul De Nobrega won the male 40km race win 1:06.71 while West Coast Berbice’s, Kurt Larose was second in 1:07.58 and Upper Demerara’s, Ras O’Selmo third in 1:16.63 to complete the first batch of events in the overall Championships.
