Days before the traditional Diwali celebrations, a large quantity of smuggled firecrackers was yesterday seized in the West Demerara area and three men are in custody.
A police source has since confirmed that the men, two from Charlestown and another from Uitlvlugt, West Coast Demerara, also offered a $200,000 bribe to drop the matter.
Kaieteur News understands that alert members of the Anna Catherina Community Police Group (CPG) were in the Side Line Dam Street when they noticed a car that was parked in a suspicious manner.
The men were asked to open the trunk of the car and several boxes of the firecrackers were found. The men reportedly admitted that the firecrackers – valued at over $500,000 – were smuggled from Suriname.
They also allegedly handed a member of the CPG a phone and someone on the other end said that he “know the (rank given)” at the Leonora Police Station.
The CPG was offered $200,000 to “drop” the matter.
However, the CPG members called the police and the men were taken to the Leonora Police Station where they were held.
Authorities, following several complaints and injuries to citizens, had ordered a ban on fireworks importation and sale. Anyone found with them could face charges and even jail time.
