Sacked former West Indies Captain Ramnaresh Sarwan smashed a brilliant unbeaten century for GCC against Everest yesterday at Bourda on the opening day of the Georgetown Cricket Association’s (GCA) Carib Beer two-day cricket competition.
The 30-year-old Guyana Skipper launched a vicious assault on the hapless Everest bowlers in his belligerent 105 with 8 fours and 7 sixes from just 74 balls while National left-hander Vishal Singh (109) and Ricardo Jadunauth (131*) also notched up tons as GCC reached 393-3 declared 12 overs after Tea.
By the close of play Everest were 42 without loss with former Test opener Ryan Ramdass on 27 and wicket keeper Joseph Perry on 12.
After Waslim Haslim (31) departed early and former West Indies under-19 Captain Leon Johnson (9) was run out, Jadunauth, who hit 13 fours and 6 sixes, added 202 for the third wicket with Singh before Surendra Hiralal had Singh caught behind at 275-3 to start the ‘Sarwan show’ in good batting conditions.
Sarwan, who has represented Guyana in three tournaments since missing this year’s home series South Africa, played an array of audacious shots and never suggested once during his entertaining knock that he was in any discomfort from the lack of fitness that was shockingly the excuse for Sarwan’s non-selection for the tour to Sri Lanka.
The few fans at Bourda were treated to a high-class batting display yesterday from one of the region’s best present-day batsman and some were overheard asking what did the selectors have against Sarwan not to pick him to play against a team which he averages 57.
In yesterday’s other match in the competition, Transport Sports Club (TSC) off-spinner Kevin Ross opened the bowling and grabbed 6-49 against Police at the Eve Leary ground.
Medium pacer Carl Rambarose supported Ross with 2-10 as the Cops were bowled out for 104 despite 42 from 17-year-old Parnell London. TSC feared even worse in their turn at the crease and were dismissed for 98 as Jason Heyliger took four wickets and Demerara left-arm pacer Andre Stoll two, to help the home team to a slim first innings lead.
Both matches will conclude today.
