The Guyana Conference of Seventh Day Adventist Church Annual Youth Congress is being held in Berbice this year. The theme for the activity this year is ‘Here we stand’.
The Congress, which will be held over three days, brings together Adventists from all over Guyana began last night.
It will end the Conference Annual Athletic championship at the Albion Community Centre, Corentyne. The official Campsite of the Conference is the All Saints Scot Church ground, Princess Elizabeth Road, New Amsterdam where the church services and major gathering will take place.
Huge tents have been erected at the site. However the various Federations of districts will be housed in six schools in New Amsterdam. Some persons will be housed in a few of the Adventist Churches in the area.
This year participants are expected from almost all of the 17 districts of Federations in the Adventist Church in Guyana, including the Rupununi, Lethem, Bartica, Essequibo Coast and Islands, Linden, West, East Coast Demerara, Georgetown, West Berbice, New Amsterdam/Canje, Corentyne and Berbice River.
More than 3,000 persons are expected to participate in what is expected to be the biggest and largest seventh day youth conference in Guyana.
Speaking with the media on Thursday, in Berbice, Assistant Youth Director of the church, Brandford Burke, said that what will be taking place in Berbice over the next few days is a yearly occurrence and is the high point in the church calendar of activities.
“It is the activity that is looked forward to in the annals of the church,” the youth director said.
He said that at the congress the youths are trained and encouraged to lift themselves, spiritually and be revived to continue the work of the lord. Decisions and direction are given and forecast as to where the church will be for the next year.
The activity was expected to kick off on Friday at 19:00 hrs with a consecration service, which will entail the Congregation having sessions of prayer and praise that will be followed by Guest Speaker Kwame Gilbert.
The feature speaker on the night will be Family Life coordinator of the Adventist Church pastor, Avert James.
The activity continues today with Sabbath School, which will be led by members of the Bara Cara congregation. The afternoon session will see the launch of the church support group programmers.
According to Burke it is extremely challenging these days to cope with trends and directions of the youths and so the church is working on different strategies to deal with the many problems and social ills today.
He said that it is noted that the youths’ event in the church are getting involved in all sorts of unwelcome activities and a lot have suicidal tendencies. Other problems such as drugs, gangs and violence of all kinds and abuse are prominent and the church will be moving to tackle the problems both within and out of the church.
Today’s activities conclude with the start of the Annual Athletics programme at the Albion Community Centre ground under lights under the aegis of the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG).
This is the third time that the conference is being held in Berbice.
President of the host district Howard Dainty, coordinator Mark Holder, Secretary/Treasurer Samantha Griffith, along with Mr Burke were all at the Scots Church ground finalizing arrangements for the activities.
They expressed glee at their district being selected to host the prestige event and gave assurance that it will be the biggest and best in the more than 30-year history of the activity.
