– GCC score exciting win over Old Fort
A resurgent Police hockey team pulled off a surprise victory over defending second division champs Western Dragons when play in the GT&T National Indoor Hockey Championships continued on Thursday evening, at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
The Dragons seemed destined for victory in the early minutes as Deon Carew put away an easy penalty corner in the 6th minute to give them the lead, but the lawmen stormed back just three minutes later with an Anton Duke field goal.
The Dragons’ Selwyn Brandt gave his side the lead for the second time with a penalty corner conversion and Carew added a second in the 12th minute, but former junior Caribbean gold medallist Runford Liverpool pulled the lawmen back to within one a minute later.
Carew completed his hat-trick with a third goal for the Dragons four minutes before the half giving them the 4 – 2 lead, but that was the last word for the Dragons while the Police were just getting started.
Dwight McCalman slammed home a double just before the half and Duke scored his second of the match six minutes into the second half to pull off the much needed 5-4 victory for the Police.
Second division pool leaders Hikers maintained their point margin by defeating Old Fort 4 – 0 in the other encounter of the evening.
Akeem Thompson, Randy Hope, Colonel ‘Scooby’ Haywood and Joel Hunte each scored one for the Hikers.
GCC enjoyed a sterling night of hockey as their first division men registered their first win of the competition in their second round clash with Old Fort. After playing to a 7 – 7 draw in the first round, the two teams did not disappoint the crowd and produced another exhilarating match that saw GCC emerge victorious in the end by a 4 – 2 margin.
Orland Semple opened the account for the Bourda boys in the very first minute with a deceptive deflection near the goal mouth and Old Fort national, Aderemi Simon, evened the score in the 15th minute to take the teams deadlocked at one apiece into half time.
A Kevin Spencer double in the second half and a second by Semple in the dying minutes wrested control of the match from Old Fort who only mustered one more goal in the match from John Abrahams.
The GCC Tigers secured their second victory of the tournament over the Spartans securing their place in the women’s final with a 3-1 victory.
Shebiki Baptiste, Tricia Fiedtkou and Trisha Woodroffe each scored one for the Tigers, while junior sensation, Marzana Fiedtkou, scored the lone Spartans goal.
The GCC veterans dished out a 12 – 4 licking on Old Fort earlier in the evening as did their under 19 side that demolished Old Fort juniors 8-0.
