All roads lead to the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) tonight when the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC) in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sports and the National communications Network presents the ninth edition of the ProAm boxing card.
Five professional and four amateur bouts will whet the appetites of boxing buffs as once again the organizers have managed to clinch the services of Barbadian heavyweight boxer, Shawn Cox who will match gloves with Kurt Layne in a highly anticipated slugfest. The other bout with an international flavour pits the skills of local lightweight sensation, Mandessa Moses up against Trinidadian Leeann Boodram.
Both overseas boxers arrived in Guyana yesterday to keep their ring dates and both were full of confidence of winning their respective bouts. Corbin said that he had never seen Layne in action but has heard quite a lot of his prowess. He said that he is cognizant that he will be attempting to beat Layne in his own backyard and that could be a tough task when one notes that Layne would benefit from the crowd support. “Nevertheless I am here to win regardless of what it takes,” exhorted Cox.
He said that ever since his fight against Leon ‘The Lion’ Gilkes on the September edition of the ProAm card, he has been engaged in stiff training. He said that he had noted some faults in his style when he fought Gilkes and has aspired to correct them. “The Guyanese fans are in for a real treat when Shawn Cox enters the ring tonight,” the muscular Bajan promised.
Leeann Boodram has also promised fireworks in her bout against Moses. The 22 years old boxer is the sister of Vicky Boodram, a Trinidadian that has proven her worth in the ‘square jungle.’ She is accompanied by her dad, who is also her trainer and he has promised Guyanese a good show. Leann is making her professional debut but has promised an extra special show tonight. “I have heard a lot about Mandessa but I am not afraid of her,” spouted the Trinidadian. When told of the disparity in the quantity of fights Moses has as against hers Boodram said, “She can have as many fights as she wants but she still has to be aware of me because I am coming with a blow that she has never seen before.”
Her father/trainer, Timal Das Boodram is backing his charge to pull off a victory. “We are not worried about her past exploits. Tonight she will have to prove her true worth in the ring. We are ready for whatever she dishes out,” he said.
The other fights on the card will see Clive Atwell up against Cecil Smith while Mark Austin will match gloves Barbadian, Revlon Lake. Simeon Hardy and Patrick Boston starts the night’s proceedings with a junior/middleweight scrap.
Fans may tune in to NCN television for a live broadcast starting at 20:00hrs while admission remains at $1000. Bell time is 20:00hrs sharp.
