The Buxton Health Centre, located on the East Coast of Demerara was recently renovated after being sponsored with $1.5 M, an allocation by President Bharrat Jagdeo through the Ministry of Health.
According to Dr Bheri Ramsaran, Minister within the Ministry of Health, the facility was in need of renovations, thus the Ministry responded swiftly.
Dr. Ramsaran said that it is the duty of the Health Ministry to maintain all the health institutions in Guyana and to facilitate the health needs of the people.
Kaieteur News was told that renovations were done on rooms for added services, a new septic tank was replaced, a roof was repaired and the interior painted.
Some members of the community said that they are pleased with the improvements of the facility.
Dorothy Osmond, a patient at the institution, told Kaieteur News that the centre was in a deplorable state before the Ministry intervened. She noted that before “this new staff” there were long waiting periods before one could seek medical assistance.
Another woman explained that this act comes in a timely manner, especially because people from the area would have to travel far distances to obtain medical treatments and check-ups; however with this renovation and staffing present, it would be very convenient for the families of Buxton.
She is contending that persons would not have to wait long hours to be treated, since there is a better equipped staffing on board.
Kaieteur News understands that the centre has a full complement of staff, including one doctor, one mid-wife, one clinic attendant, one registered nurse, one pharmacy assistant and a dental unit with a designated dental therapist.
