… upgrades representation in Brazil
Foreign Affairs Minister, Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, yesterday announced that Guyana has taken a decision to establish an embassy in oil rich Kuwait.
This decision follows an official state visit by Head of State, Bharrat Jagdeo, earlier this year to that country and a subsequent visit by the Kuwaiti premier to Guyana.
This is the first time that Guyana will have such a level of representation in that region. According to Rodrigues-Birkett the Kuwaiti government has agreed to assist and provide some resources for the establishment of the Embassy.
While an Ambassador has not been identified, Minister Rodrigues-Birkett did point out that the Ambassador will more than likely act as ambassador to some other Middle Eastern countries.
Guyana and Kuwait have signed several bilateral agreements and it is expected that with the establishment of an Embassy there will be deepened ties with the region.
She said that the move was in keeping with the policy of embracing relations with non-traditional partners.
“We are confident that the establishment of this embassy in Kuwait will further strengthen bi-laterals not only with Kuwait but from that base other countries in the Middle East.”
Rodrigues-Birkett also announced that Guyana will be upgrading its representation in Brazil with the setting up of a consulate in Boa Vista.
Reference was made about this at the inauguration of the new Takutu Bridge and according to the Minister the Government of Guyana recently received the necessary agreements from the Brazilian Government.
She said that Leila King has been appointed consular officer.
The Minister explained that King is au fait with conducting business with Brazil and that the consulate should be up and running by the end of the year.
