-D’Andrade, Forde, Morgan to lead locals
The eighth edition of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) South American (SA) 10k Road Race will storm Georgetown today with an invasion of foreign athletes for what has easily become one of the biggest calendar events in the region.
The Brazilians, who have always dominated the female race and placed among the top three with wins also in the male race, returns with two athletes while Trinidad and Tobago will have a four-man team today when the race begins at the Police Ground.
Apart from those two regionally strong countries, Suriname has confirmed two athletes while the Grenadians would be represented in the form of one athlete. Invitations were also extended to the other South American countries such as Venezuela.
Cleveland Forde, who won the Guyana and Suriname stages of the three-stage race last year and placed second in the final stage in Panama will lead Guyana’s Challenge in the international race along with Trinidad-based, Lionel D’Andrade, who was fourth last year.
D’Andrade returned from the Twin Island Republic yesterday morning to compete in the big race and is expected to go on to the Suriname stage. He will be adequate support for the locals in their quest for a clean sweep on the prizes in the male race.
Only Brazilian, Eliesio Silva and Trinidad’s Richard Jones separated Forde and D’Andrade when the 2009 race was completed. Alika Morgan will lead Guyana’s challenge in the female category of the race after placing second to Brazilian, Sueli Vieira a year ago.
The winners of both the male and female races will get US$1000 each while second; third, fourth and fifth places will pocket US$600, US$400, US$300 and US$200 respectively. Prizes
will also be awarded in the junior and masters’ categories of the race. Forde and Morgan come into today’s event in good form after winning the inaugural Ainlim 10k in September. Forde, especially, will be well oiled for the event with his recent string of international appearances for Guyana.
Forde participated at the Central American and Caribbean Games where he won bronze in the 5000m and at the Commonwealth Games. D’Andrade, who has been lighting up Trinidad for the past two years, will be enough for the local challenge.
Kaieteur Sport understands that Curtis Cox, who beat D’Andrade last week in a 7.8km race in Trinidad is a part of the Trinidadian contingent. His inclusion is an interesting psychological plot in what could be one of the best SA 10k’s ever held.
