Demerara Distillers Ltd (DDL) inked its name to the National Tournament after pledging over $1million to the Guyana Domino Association (GDA) courtesy of a cheque that was presented by Wines and Spirits Brand Manager Mrs. Maria Munroe to Association President Robert Williams yesterday in the Company’s Boardroom on High Street.
The sponsorship which was done under the Ivanoff Vodka brand will see the tournament run off in all three counties (Demerara, Essequibo and Berbice) for a first prize of $300,000 plus trophy, while the runner-up team is set to collect $150,000 plus trophy, 3rd place $125,000 plus trophy and 4th place $75,000 plus trophy.
The tournament Most Valuable Player will receive $10,000, while the respective zone winners will win $10,000 each.
Entrance fee is $6,000 per team and each will receive one bottle of Ivanoff Lemon Vodka, a bottle of Standard Ivanoff Vodka, a box of Wave Orange Juice and a bottle of 7-up drink.
According to the Organisers, the tournament will be divided up into 24 zones with Georgetown allotted 7; East Coast Demerara 4; West Demerara 3; Essequibo, East Berbice, East Bank Demerara and Bartica 2 apiece and Linden and West Berbice 1 each.
Williams speaking at the launching ceremony said that the GDA is hoping to commence the competition sometime during next week and expects it to conclude by the first week in December.
He noted that the collaboration between the GDA and DDL is an exciting one that has in turn been able to produce the largest tournament in three years.
Williams further stated that the tournament apart from the anticipated keen rivalry among the teams also serves to foster closer interaction between the various racial groups.
Munroe in her brief remarks promised the organisers continued support on an even bigger scale next year if the organisation of the tournament meets the approval of the Company.
