In what has been hailed as the first of its kind for the financial institution, Republic Bank (Guyana) Limited has chosen 21 of its clients for training.
During the closing ceremony at its New Market Street Head Offices, Republic’s Managing Director, John Alves, noted that while the programme is a new one for the bank’s customers in Guyana, already more than 200 local entrepreneurs were trained in Trinidad and Tobago also.
The participants were chosen from small and medium size business and included a cross section of manufacturing and trade entities, including gas station, pest control, furniture manufacturing and auto sales.
According to Alves, the Commercial Customer Business program is geared to create a vibrant network of business and professional customers with proven and up-to-date skills for business management and solutions.
“It is significant to Republic Bank because of the rich possibilities to be had from this new level of relationship that we have formed with this special group of our commercial customers and more importantly, which they have formed among themselves.”
The banker disclosed that the programme is part of its commitment to develop and empower its customers and has been in the works for over six years in collaboration with Republic Bank Trinidad and Tobago and the Arthur Lok Jack Graduate School of Business, University of the West Indies.
Conducting the training for Arthur Lok Jack was local consultant, Claudeville McGarrell of CM Associates.
Alves noted that the bank has already seen the benefits from its increased focus on the small and medium business sector.
“We hold fast to the vision of the increased potential of an engaged, educated and empowered small business sector, and through this, a guaranteed expansion of the local economic landscape.”
Already, he said, Republic Bank has taken the initiative to restructure some of its lending practices to specifically cater to the small business sector.
The Managing Director also listed an online development aid for the sector, the SME Toolkit Caribbean, and the Venture Out For Women programme, which is geared to empower women entrepreneurs on skills to pursue their own business.
Carla Roberts, Corporate Manager-Corporate and Commercial Credit explained that the programme was launched on September 22 and ran for five Wednesdays.
Each of the 21 participants received certificates.
