NEW AMSTERDAM, BERBICE – Five persons remain in police custody as investigations into the case of contaminated food continue.
On Sunday, scores of persons who attended the Community Policing Group Retreat held at the Berbice High School in New Amsterdam became ill and had to be rushed to the hospital.
Some reported having bouts of diarrhoea, and dizzy spells; some lost consciousness. It is suspected that the meal, which consisted of fried rice and what appeared to be baked chicken, may have been contaminated.
There were instances where persons had taken the food, which was served in a Styrofoam box, home and shared it with others, including children.
A source from the Guyana Police Force said that of those detained for questioning are a man, his wife and daughter. The patriarch is said to be a senior official of the community policing and hails from West Coast of Berbice. The detainees are being held at the Central Police Station.
Police are focusing on the angle of contamination and have since dispatched a sample of the meal to Eve Leary from where it would be sent for testing.
Meanwhile, only two of the suspected poison victims remained hospitalised yesterday. According to a senior official of the Ministry of Health, by the end of Sunday the number of people treated at the New Amsterdam Hospital was 110. Of this amount, 41 were hospitalised. The two who are still patients are in a stable condition but are being monitored.
One admission was recorded at the Fort Wellington Hospital. Six ranks from the Guyana Police Force, including Assistant Superintendent Leroy Albert were among those admitted on Sunday.
