By Franklin Wilson in Suriname with the compliments of Digicel
There was no stopping the ‘Golden Jaguars’ last evening at the Andre Kamperveen Stadium, Paramaribo Suriname, a solid performance from the Guyanese saw them inflicting a 2-0 whipping on Suriname to win group C of the Digicel Caribbean Cup in comprehensive style.
Goals each by Walter ‘Boyd’ Moore from the penalty spot in the 17th minute and second half substitute Devon Millington in the 90th guided Guyana to its second win over the Surinamese at the same venue after defeating them last November to win the inaugural Suriname Independence Cup 1-0.
The performance of the Guyanese last evening was commanding as they not only won the game and the group but they silenced the large and noisy crowd on hand.
Both teams started the game with an air of confidence, Suriname, backed by the fact that they have had the better of the Guyanese in the past and Guyana confident that ‘Dis time nah lang time’ as the old saying goes.
With the inclusion of former Captain Charles Pollard in defence and John Rodrigues pushed into midfield, Guyana pushed forward with more frequency in the opening minutes and came close to scoring in the 6th minute, Dwight Peters missing the chance. But on the counterattack, Suriname’s Stefano Rijssel also came close to scoring with his powerful shot going just wide of the left upright.
The game was just about heating up with neither team willing to lay back and allow the other to dictate proceedings. The exchanges were fast and punchy with the majority of the crowd cheering on their home boys and the few dozen Guyanese supporters also giving support to their boys.
Rijeesl, playing upfront for Suriname was becoming a pest to the Guyana defence and he was firing to goal again in the 9th minute having caught the Guyana defence flat footed. The Golden Jaguars however, had plans of their own and kept chipping away at the home team by passing, holding possession of the ball as they pushed forward.
Success was not long in coming and in the 17th minute, the hard working and nagging Dwain Jacobs took on their defence working his way into the box but was brought down; Referee Lee Davis of Trinidad and Tobago had no hesitation in blowing and pointing to the penalty spot.
Up came Walter Moore to take the shot which he buried in the left corner with goalkeeper Obrendo Huiswoud going to his right. Huiswoud started again in goal with the number one choice Roany Aloema out, injured.
The crowd went silent thereafter but the on field action was maintained at a high pace. Suriname created many chances which just did not go the route of the goal owing to some solid defending by Guyana and equally focused goalkeeping by Ronson Williams who had won the best goalkeeper award at the Independence Cup competition.
Suriname’s Emelio Limon, their play maker created many of the chances as his nimble footwork and skill drew many fouls for his team. He was a constant bother to the Guyanese side.
Jacobs, Moore, Peters, Rodrigues all enjoyed good moments for Guyana as well in the high octane first half. Williams was in fine form and made two excellent saves from back to back shots by Rijeesl, the first rebounding back to the Suriname forward who fired again but Williams was equal to the task as he parried it away for a corner.
The second half saw the Jaguars maintaining their dominance but Suriname fell away. The subsequent substitutions of Limon and Rijeesl saw a dip in the zest they displayed earlier.
Millington was introduced into the game in the 84th minute for Abrams and made an immediate impact with his speed. On the stroke of full time he pounced on a poor clearance by Suriname’s Captain and central defender Derrick Garden whose half hearted attempt resulted in the ball falling just in front of him from an initial Millington shot. The Guyanese forward who also scored against the Surinamese last November quickly made contact with ball again and placed his shot just in side the near post, the diving Huiswoud had no chance of saving.
Millington’s goal capped a fine performance by the Jaguars and despite the loss, Suriname and Guyana will face each other again in Stage Two of the DCC set for Trinidad and Tobago from November 2 – 6, Haiti being the other team in this group which is being dubbed, the group of death.
LISTEN HOW JAGDEO WILL MAKE ALL GUYANESE RICH!!!
