Guyana’s Lionel D’Andrade and Kelvin Johnson finished on the podium Saturday in the Cush 50th Anniversary 7.8 miles race in Trinidad and Tobago.
D’Andrade, who is expected to compete at the South American 10km Road Race Classic on Sunday, was second in 39:20 behind Trinidad’s Curtis Cox, who ran 38:28 to win the event with Johnson taking third in 39:44.
Speaking with Kaieteur Sport briefly yesterday, D’Andrade said that the race was the right balance between speed and distance for him as he prepares for the South American 10km race, the OECS Half Marathon and Suriname Marathon.
“I am coming home for South American 10km Sunday. I am going to Suriname for the second leg of South American 10km race. I am used this (7.8 miles) as speed work for the marathon in Suriname and OECS half marathon in Tortola,” D’Andrade said.
The seasoned distance runner indicated that Johnson will not be competing at the South American 10km race because he has to compete at the University of the West Indies Half Marathon in Trinidad the same weekend.
D’Andrade’s best placing in the IAAF South American 10km race was in 2007 when he finished second in the international race. Since then he has been among the top five finishers in the race and will look for his first overall win on Sunday.
