…as new Sexual Offences Act swings into action
Two men, Clifton Ramnarine, called ‘Dougla’, 35, a labourer of Goed Bananen Land, and Najendra Isbarran, 28, called ‘Boyo’, of Betsy Ground, both villages in East Canje Berbice, were remanded by Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo when they appeared before her at the Reliance Magistrate’s Court on a charge of (buggery) rape committed on August 14, on a 14-year-old lad of Betsy Ground, East Canje Berbice.
A harrowing tale was revealed of how the youth was abducted and taken to a bushy area. His hands and feet were tied behind his back; a pill was forced into his mouth which was then covered with duct tape, before he was brutally raped by the two men.
Prosecutor Corporal Roberto Figueira told the court that on the day in question the youth was sent on an errand to collect milk at Goed Bananen Land. It was further revealed that the men, who are known to the boy, somehow took him to a lonely area called the Tamarind Tree where they sodomised him.
The matter was subsequently reported and the men were arrested.
Under the new Sexual Offender’s Act, which precludes the men from facing a trial in the Magistrate’s Court, the magistrate will have to decide after being provided with the evidence if the men will stand trial in the High Court.
The men were at first released after 72 hours on $35,000 bail. They were then required to report to the Reliance Police Station on a daily basis.
On the issue of bail Prosecutor Figueira objected on the grounds of the nature, prevalence and gravity of the offence. He also cited the probability of the accused tampering with the witness. One of the accused is related to the accused.
They are to return to court on Wednesday November 3.
