Police corporal Emrit Winter is currently listed as stable at the Georgetown Public Hospital after he was shot in the hip while trying to apprehend three gunmen following a robbery in Port Kaituma.
According to a police report, around 13:45 hours yesterday three men entered the home of gold dealer Farouk Ishmael and his wife Jacqueline James. This newspaper was told that at the time of the incident only James was home.
Reports are that the three men who were armed with handguns stuck up the woman who is said to be in an advanced stage of pregnancy and proceeded to rob her of some $9 M in cash and a quantity of raw gold.
Immediately after the gunmen left with the booty an alarm was raised and the police were informed.
Acting on information the police cornered two of the suspects in some bushes. According to reports out of the area there was an exchange of gunfire, during which police Corporal Emrit Winter was shot. The two suspects were subsequently arrested and were found with a .32 revolver with four live matching rounds and one spent shell.
James was taken to the Port Kaituma Hospital for medical attention and is under observation while the police Corporal was air dashed to the Georgetown and is at the GPHC. Efforts are being made to arrest the third suspect.
Meanwhile this newspaper was told that one of the suspects detained for the robbery is a close relative of the victim. He previously lived with James and her husband.
The matter is being investigated.
