The Berbice Media Eleven and Guysuco have reached the final of the cricket competition when the Berbice Chamber of Commerce in collaboration with other Corporate Business entities in Berbice held a day of sport and fun day at the Albion Community Centre.
The highlight of the day’s activities was the five over softball cricket competition which attracted some 15 teams including some combined units from across Berbice.
The teams participating were Oldendorff Carriers, Banks DIH Limited, Guysuco, Republic Bank, Ainlim and Geddes Grant combine (Neal and Massey), University of Guyana, Raj Pool Hall, the Media Eleven, Nand Persaud and Company Limited, Regional Administration Region 6, Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Limited, Gafoor’s, International Pharmaceutical Agency, Demerara Bank and Imran and Sons, and Poonai Pharmacy combined.
Results of the matches played were as follows: Guysuco defeated Republic Bank by 11 runs. Guysuco made 47-5 and then Republic Bank to 36-5. Game two GT&T held Raj Pool Hall to 29-4 and in reply made 30-3 in 4.3 overs to win by seven wickets. Berbice Media Eleven then made light work of Nand Persaud and Company Limited whipping them by 28 runs. The media Team took first strike and blasted the highest score in the competition as they raced to 67-3 and then restricted Nand Persaud to 39-4.
Oldendorff Carriers then upset Banks DIH Limited by three runs in a close encounter, Oldendorff Carriers 44-5; Banks DIH 41-5. Gafstar (Gafoors) defeated IPA by seven wickets off the final delivery. IPA 54-2, Gafstar 55-3; Demerara Bank beat Regional Administration Region Six, by 20 runs. Demerara Bank 51-4, Region Six Admin 31-6. Neal and Massey made 52-5 to beat University of Guyana 32-5 by 20 runs. Imran and Sons, and Poonai Pharmacy combined drew the bye to the next round.
The quarterfinals, which were reduced to two over encounters due to time constraints, saw Guysuco making 18-2 to win from GT&T 7-4. Imran and Sons, and Poonai Pharmacy scored 18-2 in their game against Neal and Massey who replied with 20-2 in 1.2 overs.
Oldenderf Carriers next came up against the Berbice Media Eleven and made 12-3 to which the Media combination replied with 13-1 in 1.2 overs.
The competition was now reduced to a one over affair and saw Demerara Bank scoring 9-1 in .3 overs to surpass Gafstar 8-1.
In the semifinals which were played in semi darkness, Guysuco then made 13-1 in their one over and restricted Neal and Massey to 9-0. The second semifinal between the Berbice Media Eleven and Demerara Bank was then reduced to a three delivery affair.
Demerara Bank was inserted and only scraped 3-0 to which the Media replied with 4-0.
At that stage it was night and the organisers decided to call a halt to the day’s proceedings.
The finals and third place play off set to take place on a date to be announced.
The purpose of this initiative is to foster and gain better working relationship amongst companies and other business entities in the county and according to the organisers since sports serves as a sort of medicine in this regard the day of sports was chosen.
This is the 1st such initiative in the Region and the organizers’ have planned to make it an annual affair.
Meanwhile, the media eleven has commenced training and vowed to take care of Guysuco and have since added a few more players to their line up. They have also held out a challenge to their Demerara counterparts for a champion of champions game, at a date and venue to be announced.
The day’s Activity was coordinated by Imram Sacoor manager of the Republic Bank and Peter Sangster of Neal and Massey.
