Rondell Williams netted a brace in the 42nd and 49th minutes with support from Randy Stoby who netted in the 14th to secure a vital win for Golden Stars FC against Uitvlugt when action in the 3rd annual Mackeson/Digicel Sweet Sixteen football championships commenced at the Plaisance Community Center Ground, Wednesday evening last. Trayon Bobb managed to pull one back in the 62nd minute for the Uitvlugt FC but his efforts were too little too late as Golden Stars FC secured a 3-1 victory in the end.
In the preliminary game, Santos FC stamped its superiority over New Amsterdam United FC with a 3-0 drubbing. Those breaching New Amsterdam’s defence were William Europe (42nd) and Kacy John (51st and 65th minutes).
While the Uitvlugt/Golden Stars United game turned out to be a one sided affair the Santos/New Amsterdam match compensated with intense action from the onset. Randy Stoby sent Santos ahead when he collected on the left wing and drew the keeper out of the box as he attempted to nullify the attack. Stoby shifted his weight and sent the ball into the right corner leaving the Uitvlugt goalie stranded.
The second success for the winners came after a goal mouth scrimmage where Williams capitalized with a well placed shot. Seven minutes later, Williams repeated his feat, evading the opposition’s defence to register the final success of the game.
Even then, the boys from the Ancient County refused to say die but despite their most resilient efforts were unable to narrow the margin of defeat.
The competition shifts to the Buxton Community Centre Ground tonight when Winners Connection FC square off with Cougars FC in the supporting game while BVTUFC tackle Flamingo FC in the feature attraction. The action gets underway at 16:00hrs.
