Minister of Health, Dr Leslie Ramsammy, was the latest high profile client to visit the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation-based Caribbean Heart Institute (CHI).
According to reports reaching this newspaper the Minister visited the facility yesterday afternoon and was attended to by Dr Ghansham Singh, one of the four practising cardiologists attached to the facility.
This newspaper understands that the Health Minister had some years ago suffered a heart complication and had required bypass operation overseas.
As a result, it is recommended that he seek regular cardiology checkups, as was reportedly done yesterday.
Minister Ramsammy who is regarded as one of the most active ministers of Government offered the feature address yesterday during the opening ceremony of a University of Guyana Tropical Diseases Research Development workshop which was held at the Regency Hotel.
At the time the Minister appeared to be in good health and spoke at length on the issue of tropical diseases and its connection to climate change.
However, efforts by this newspaper to contact the usually accessible Minister last evening were futile.
According to a statement issued by the Public Relations Department of the public hospital last evening the minister had visited the hospital for a routine medical. The statement added that following the check-up the Minister Ramsammy was sent away.
Since last year CHI, which is headed by New York-based Dr Gary Stephens, has been benefiting from the added capabilities of Dr Singh who is a Board Certified Internist. He was a local practising doctor before he migrated some years ago to the United States and sought to upgrade himself.
Dr Singh is also an Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine at the Cornell University in the United States but has nonetheless decided to return here to render his service to CHI at the request of Dr Stephens.
He along with Interventional Cardiologist, Dr Pratik Soni joined the workforce at CHI last year allowing the facility, with the support of Drs Haydock Wilson and Shaskil Kumar, to offer an emergency response service.
