Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Frank Anthony will this afternoon visit the Plaisance Community Center Ground ECD when the 3rd Annual Mackeson/Digicel Sweet Sixteen football tournament kicks off with two exciting matches. In the first at 18:00hrs, Santos FC opposes New Amsterdam United FC in a highly anticipated match while Golden Stars FC comes up against Uitvlugt in the feature attraction.
Coordinator of the tournament, Sheron Abrams is very upbeat and has promised much excitement for the duration of the tournament. She is urging the public to come out in support of the players as they display their talent in what she describes as a very competitive tournament.
Meanwhile, Kaieteur Sport attempted to speak with the coaches of the teams involved in the feature attraction. Owen Adonis who will be the main man behind the strategies employed by the Golden Stars FC in their bid to stage a successful start to the tournament could not be reached despite stringent efforts to contact him.
However, we were able to speak with Sydroy Nedd, coach of Uitvlugt. He said that his charges had experienced a slight setback to their preparations during the later part of the year because they had not been playing competitive football during that time. He blamed their inactivity on lack of adequate sponsorship coupled with the inclement weather patterns which left the practice areas sodden and unplayable.
Notwithstanding these setbacks, Mr. Nedd is rooting for his boys saying that they are a determined bunch and would battle stringently against their opponents. He pointed out that despite their inability to win the tournament in the past the Uitvlugt FC had managed to reach the semi-finals when the tournament was played on the West Coast Demerara. “We will attempt to eclipse that feat,” said Mr. Nedd.
The tournament will be played on a knockout basis and the organizers have said that they would be placing a lot of emphasis on discipline. They are urging the respective team captains to remind their charges of the fair play stance adopted by the ruling football body, FIFA even as they emulate such principles.
The winning team receives $400,000 and a trophy while the runners-up receive half that amount and a trophy. Teams finishing third and fourth receive 100,000 and $75,000 respectively.
