Man plunges to death in Mahaicony River…
The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has recommended an inquest into the death of Mahaicony resident Godwin Maxwell.
Maxwell had jumped into the Mahaicony River on Monday August 30, last, in an effort to escape from custody of the police at the Mahaicony Station after a court appearance.
At the time, Maxwell, a popular sport promoter, was on bail for several charges of evading taxes.
Eyewitnesses stated that Maxwell, who was not placed in the lock-ups while awaiting the posting of the bail by his relatives, ran out of the station and headed towards the old Mahaicony Bridge from where he plunged into the river. At the time, a police rank was in hot pursuit
Maxwell’s body was recovered at the mouth of the Mahaicony River two days later.
Initially it was believed that Maxwell was wounded after the policeman discharged rounds in his direction.
However, his body revealed no gunshot wounds.
The file on the matter was sent to the office of the DPP for advice and she has since recommended that an inquest be held.
According to a police press release, the necessary documents are being processed to be forwarded to the coroner.
