– New York authorities suspect foul play
The news of -22-year old US based Guyanese Omadevi Megbarran-Saran’s mysterious death on Saturday has left her family both shocked and confused.
At approximately 4:20am on Saturday morning police were called to the corner of Jamaica Avenue and 130th Street when passersby reported a car on fire at the location.
After extinguishing the flames a body was discovered in the back seat of the burnt BMW 2000.
At 7:51am on Saturday morning Omadevi’s facebook status message was updated to read: “Omadevi M. Sarran aka Annie is missing, anyone sees her contact her husband.”
It is now believed that the body discovered in Queens is that of the missing young woman who was also two months pregnant when she died.
The young lady who lived with her husband in California was in New York visiting with her mother for a few days when she met her demise.
According to Naresh Megbarran, the young woman’s father, he was told by his wife on Friday that Omadevi had gone out and she had not returned home. Mr. Megbarran said that he tried to allay his wife’s fears but he was worried himself, saying “Omadevi was a good girl; she wouldn’t stay out like that without telling anybody.”
He noted that he was unable to get any answers from his wife as to when his daughter left her home, who she left with and where she was going since his wife was distraught with grief and was having a hard time explaining the details.
According to an article by the New York Daily News, authorities do not believe that the car crashed and burst into flames instead, the police said, it was intentionally set afire and they suspect that the fire was started to cover up foul play. The article stated that the car was registered to a man who lives in upstate Queensbury but it was not clear whether the vehicle had been stolen.
Omadevi, who grew up in Narine Street, Annandale, migrated to the US in 2006 and according to her father she had been working and studying there. Her father noted that when she discovered that she was pregnant, the young woman gave up school since she found the demands on her time were too stressful and fatiguing.
The investigation into the cause of Omadevi’s death is still underway.
