Dear Editor,
My heart cries bitterly every time I open one of the daily newspapers and read about how our society has failed young Neesa Gopaul. The police failed her, the Human Services Ministry failed her and it’s a shame her teachers failed her too.
Had anyone listen to Neesa and take the necessary stands she would have been alive today. Her mother was heartless and so was her lover. How can a mother sit back and watch her child/children being abused? I am a mother too and I think as parents we need to be there for our children, no matter how old they are, they are still our babies.
A lot could have been done for this young child but no, everyone failed her, we all failed her because we are deaf, we do not listen to the cries of the poor and the powerless.
This nation should hang its head in shame because we failed to protect our children of today. All are involved, all are consumed, we must never again allow the cries of the next child, sister or mother to go unnoticed, we must act, we must pray for all our children. We must repent of our stubbornness and our unconcern.
Rest in Peace Neesa.
Chandra Singh
