GCC ‘A’ crushed Old Fort by a 4-0 margin in the Men’s First Division fixture to register yet another victory that made them favourites for the final which was scheduled to be played last evening. The Bourda Blues ended the pool rounds unbeaten.
The clash against Old Fort started out with GCC enjoying the majority of the possession in the opening ten minutes of the match, but did not convert their opportunities into goals until the 25th minute when Dwayne Scott deflected a hard penalty corner strike up into the Old Fort net.
Old Fort seemed to settle despite the deficit and the game slowed down somewhat with the majority of play taking place in midfield. GCC, however, improved their performance in the second half and raided the Old Fort goal area with greater frequency.
Alan Fernandes was first to extend the lead when he found some room to blast his shot between the Old Fort uprights in the 29th minute.
Shaka Gill took the score to 3-0 in favour of the blue and white with a well-timed reverse stick shot that surprised Old Fort goalkeeper Michel Smith and Kevin Spencer supplied the fourth in the 38th minute with a penalty corner strike to end the agony for the red and white shirts who failed to win a match in the preliminary phase that left them out of contention for a final berth.
The victory set up an intriguing battle between GCC ‘A’ and defending champions Hikers ‘A’ for the crown.
Hikers Cadets and GCC ‘B’ each made light work of their female counterparts.
The Cadets defeated Hikers ladies 3-0 with a double score from Michael Harding and one from Al Fredricks, while GCC ‘B’ won 2-0 through goals from Shaka Gill and Stephen Xavier against their female counterparts.
Hikers ‘B’ and GCC ‘B’ are the leaders in the points for the men’s second division title and were expected to face off last evening.
Last night’s matches also featured an exhibition game between top ladies teams GCC Tigers and Hikers and that was followed by a men’s second division final between the GCC ‘B’ and the Hikers Cadets with the men’s final being the last game of the night.
