Aspiring neurosurgeon Kelly Ann Persaud yesterday walked away with the country’s top honours in this year’s Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examinations, when the Ministry of Education held its annual education awards ceremony.
Persaud, currently a Queen’s College sixth form student, received three awards. The first was for being the top achiever among secondary schools, having gained Grade One passes in 15 subjects. The second award was the Minister of Education’s award for the Best Science Student and the third for being the best overall performer at the CSEC exams.
Persaud edged out fellow Queen’s College student and aspiring economist Saieed Khalil for top honours, who gained passes in 16 subjects, namely 15 Grade Ones and one Grade Two. Khalil is currently pursuing a degree in Economics at the University of Guyana.
Even though Khalil had one subject more than Persaud, she copped the top spot because of set criteria that dictates that a student who gains passes in the sciences would be rated higher than one in the arts.
Queen’s College students Lide Forde and Candace Barnes also received awards for their performances. The two scored Grade One passes in 14 subjects, and one Grade Two pass each.
Persaud’s older sister, Kia, who was last year named the country’s top CSEC performer last year, was among the top performers in the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE). The others were Eileen Marray, Yana-Marisa Edwards, Kibwey Peterkin, Rebecca Khan and Dinello Mahabir.
The CSEC top performers for Junior Secondary Schools were: Yeeshana Ganpat of the Anna Regina Secondary School (13 Grade Ones, One Grade Two); Kaliak Bulkan of Mae’s Secondary (13 Grade Ones); Salma Ferouz of Mae’s Secondary (13 Grade Ones); and Krysta Yan of Marina Academy (13 Grade Ones).
The top performers for the General Certificate of Education (GCE) Advanced Level were Rizwan Safie, Dinesh Sukhu and Stephan Hutson.
The standouts at the National Grade Six Assessment who were awarded were Sonia Ghir, Tauhir Khan and Victoria Najab, all of whom are now attending Queen’s College. The Best Graduation Teacher from the Cyril Potter College of Education, Hamant France, also picked up his trophy.
Outstanding students from the Technical Institutes also received awards in the following categories: Craft Certificate (Rondell Lachmaren); Technician Certificate (Jermain Lawson); Technician Diploma (Kushyal Budhan); Business Certificate (Lynnel Layne); Business Diploma (Tynisha Niles); Science Diploma (Preston Paul); and Computer Science Diploma (Nazimul Ghanie).
Awards were also presented for the best performers of Carnegie School of Home Economics in the areas of Household Management (Anesia Glen), Catering and Hospitality (Khemraj Bahadur) and Cosmetology and Hair Care (Carolyn Johnson.)
West Ruimveldt Primary was named the Most Improved Primary School, while the Tucville Secondary School earned the title of Most Improved Junior Secondary School.
President’s College received top honours for being the Most Improved Senior Secondary School.
Prime Minister Samuel Hinds attended the event and urged the top performers to stay in Guyana and help develop the country.
