Centenarian Gertrude Muriel Victoria Dolphin, 102, who was a past teacher and member of the Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU) was honoured by that entity at her 244 Bourda Street, Lacytown residence yesterday.
The bedridden senior citizen received a basket of nourishing products. Her brother, 92-year-old Irad Dolphin said that his sister is now losing her vision. But yesterday, she accepted her gift with glee.
According to General Secretary of GTU, Coretta Mc Donald, in recognition of World Teachers’ Day, the GTU is honouring six special past teachers – two in Essequibo, two in Berbice and two in Demerara. Each district has various programmes to honour teachers.
The General Secretary said that the centenarian was a teacher for many years, and an outstanding member of the GTU, who contributed to the building of the union in her prime.
She added that the GTU will be identifying practicing teachers and honouring the standouts via the ‘Teacher of the Year’ award in the year ahead.
