Ninvalle to run for C/wealth Federation VP post
Guyana’s boxers at the Commonwealth Games currently underway in Delhi, India, will get into action starting tomorrow after comfortably making weight and passing the required medical tests.
President of the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association, Steve Ninvalle, told Kaieteur Sport yesterday that all three fighters, Devon Boatswain, Cleon Rock and Dexter Jordan, were a few ounces under the designated weight in their respective divisions.
At the draw for the bouts, all three Guyanese drew byes to the next round. Boatswain will open things for the Guyanese in the Middleweight division today against Afaese Fata of Samoa with the winner advancing to face the winner of the bout between fighters from Tanzania and Swaziland to move forward to the quarterfinals set for October 10.
Rock, a Lightweight, will step into the ring tomorrow where he will look to get past England’s Thomas Stalker. At the Junior Commonwealth Games, where he won a silver medal, Rock lost to an English fighter and will look for some sort of poetic justice by eliminating Stalker at his first hurdle. The winner of this contest will have to get past the winner of the bout between two fighters from Bangladesh and Sri Lanka to reach the quarterfinals.
Jordon battles on Thursday in the Flyweight division against Neo Thamahane of Lesotho as he looks to move forward. Next up for the victor of this bout is the winner of the clash between boxers from Papua New Guinea and Kenya on October 9.
Ninvalle was high in praise of Coach Terrence Poole and the work he has done with the boxers and moreso for the discipline the three boxers have shown to date. The GABA boss said they have been very disciplined and focused to this point and once they continue in this vein he anticipates good things from them in the ring.
He noted that they were calm and rested in preparation for the action from today.
Meanwhile, Ninvalle informed that he has decided to run for the post of Vice President of the Commonwealth Boxing Federation when the officials of that body meet in India later this week.
He informed that most of the Caribbean nations at the games have indicated that they will throw their support behind him. He said that while not knowing the outcome at this point, being in the race is an achievement not only for him but for Guyana.
He also held discussions with AIBA president Dr. Ching-Kuo Wu Sunday and they looked at ways the world body could be of assistance to the boxing programme here. Dr. Wu requested further discussions, some of which will be held during these games and AIBA’s conference set for Kazakhstan in a few weeks time. Dr. Wu expressed his commitment to the development of amateur boxing in Guyana and the way forward will be discussed in the very near future.
