Dear Editor,
Dr. Jagdeo once again could not properly defend his government’s incompetence; inform the people of Berbice, whilst in Corriverton recently that the sugar industry might be dead.
What is alarming is after so many years in power, this regime have most of the citizens of Guyana depending heavily on GuySuCo for a job. Now if the Skeldon Factory has to close its doors what will these people do, how are they going to survive.
I believe that since 2005 when they started to build the factory, Mr. Anthony Vieira who is very knowledgeable of the sugar industry was very critical of this move, but yet this government did not take his advice or seek to solicit his help. Now five years after all the errors and over US$200M, the President decided he will have to get personally involved. What was he doing all the time?
Mr. Editor, before investing, did this government do any feasibility study or research to know if this project would have worked, or explore the possibilities of getting investors to open other factories so that they don’t have to depends on GuySuCo alone?
Times are getting harder in Guyana, I do hope that the residents take this as a warning and start putting mechanism in place to face hard times because, after five (5) years with all the trials and errors, they are worst than when they started and added to that since taking over this country, GuySuCo is not what they could depend on for providing a future.
