On her first trip to Guyana, Special Representative to Muslim Communities Farah Anwar Pandith was amazed by the sophistication of questions from Guyanese students. Local students told her they get their news from Facebook.
During her one-day stop in Guyana, Ms. Pandith visited with students from Bishop’s High School, Isa Islamic School and Shaheed Boys and Girls Orphanages. She had a lunch meeting with Muslim, religious and civic leaders and an evening meeting with the Muslim Youth League.
Ms. Pandith’s office is focusing on people-to-people engagement with the next generation and building networks of like-minded thinkers. In her role as Special Representative, she wants to listen, engage, discuss, share and partner with civil society and government leaders. She is focused on finding ways to build initiatives together for the common good.
“I was floored by the level of sophistication of the questions the Guyanese students asked. They are among the most well informed students I’ve met,” Ms. Pandith said. Guyana is only one of the 27 countries Ms. Pandith has visited in the past 10 months, so her statement says a lot for the students of Guyana.
