Residents in the environs of Lima, on the Essequibo Coast, got the scare of their lives when they were confronted by a Jaguar (Tiger Cat) Tuesday night.
According to the police, the animal, which is owned by an established businessman on the Essequibo Coast, was housed at Lima in a large cage when it escaped some time during the night.
The large animal, which is said to be a pet, was seen prowling in the residential community, driving fear into the residents who tried to protect themselves by hiding in their homes.
The police were later summoned on the scene. The animal reportedly posed a threat to the Security Officers.
The police also said that a mentally disturbed man, identified as Leon Alphonso, who normally feeds the animal, recaptured the animal yesterday morning.
They added that the animal apparently grew to know him.
The businessman and his family were said to be rearing the huge cat for a period of time.
