The Bridge that links Canal Number One and Parfait Harmonie Housing Scheme, West Bank Demerara, is considered by residents a death trap.
For months persons who use the bridge have been complaining about its dilapidated state.
They are of the opinion that probably when some one loses his life as a result of the bridge condition, then the relevant authorities will look into their plight.
One woman, who prefers to remain anonymous, said that her vehicle tyres were damaged on numerous occasions by the huge nails on the structure. During last week, several minibus operators were seen replacing planks that were missing on the said bridge.
Persons who reside in close proximity to the death trap are finding it very annoying at nights, because as vehicles traverse the bridge, the loose planks cause lots of noise which will wake them out of their sleep.
They say that the bridge also endangers the lives of children, who use it on their way to and from school. Residents believe that their community is being neglected. They said that, because the situation was highlighted by the media several months ago and nothing has been done.
According to the Region Three vice Chairman, a team of field officers visited the bridge and recommendations will soon be made. Efforts to secure a comment from Minister of Housing, Irfaan Ali, proved futile.
