With a reported intent to secure medical attention overseas, owner of CNS TV Channel 6, Chandra Narine Sharma, yesterday left Guyana aboard an Aerojet International flight for Trinidad.
Reports are that Sharma, who was a patient at the Balwant Singh Hospital since Saturday was transported by ambulance to the airport but boarded the plane as a normal passenger. He left around 10:30 hours. It has been reported that the leader of the Justice For All Party had suffered a heart attack on Saturday.
That same day his wife approached the Caribbean Heart Institute for a letter to allow Sharma to leave the jurisdiction in the face of a court action.
Reports are that Sharma’s passport was released after his lawyer, Nigel Hughes, made an application to the High Court for his client to leave the jurisdiction on the grounds that he required urgent medical attention overseas.
Sharma is currently embroiled in a sexual offence court matter which was scheduled to be heard yesterday. However the case was reportedly postponed due to Sharma’s illness and due to the fact that Special Prosecutor Sanjeev Datadin is currently out of the country.
This newspaper was informed that although Sharma has sought cardiac attention at the locally-based Caribbean Heart Institute in the past he had not been treated there this time around.
CHI has a fulltime resident Interventional Cardiologist, Dr Soni Pratik, who had successfully performed a procedure on Sharma last February. On this occasion, Sharma was said to have visited the institute with his wife. He reportedly remained in the vehicle while his wife visited the institute seeking a letter that would have cleared Mr Sharma to travel overseas. However, Mr Sharma never presented himself and the letter was never issued, a source said.
Reports which suggest that no doctor was available at CHI to attend to Sharma following his reported heart attack at the weekend were regarded as grossly inaccurate and farthest from the truth, the institute stated. A doctor is always on call, a spokesperson added.
An official at the institution said that on learning that Sharma had reportedly suffered a heart attack recently, officials at CHI had advised Sharma’s wife, Ms Savitri Singh, that she merely needed to make an appointment to see the resident doctor.
Dr Soni Pratik has completed more than 35 angiograms and angioplasties successfully. In fact CHI’s ability to offer an immediate response to cardiac emergencies around the clock became possible even in the absence of Dr Gary Stephens, CHI’s Chief Executive Office and Cardiac Surgeon.
