Thirty-nine year old Ravie Persaud of Hampshire Squatting area, Corentyne, who is reportedly in the habit of beating his wife, was sentenced to three months in jail by Magistrate Tajenarine Ramroop at the Albion Magistrate’s Court.
Persaud was charged with assaulting his wife, Kamla Devi Persaud at their home last week.
Police Prosecutor Inspector Satrohan Dayaram told the court that on the day in question, around 17:00 hrs, the woman was at home with her children when Persaud came home under the influence of alcohol and began accusing her of having ‘man with him’.
An argument developed during which Persaud dealt the woman several slaps.
The matter was reported and the accused was arrested and charged.
Dayaram also informed the court that the defendant was previously charged with a similar offence and was placed on a bond to keep the peace for six months.
Persaud, in begging for leniency tried to blame alcohol for his constant predicament.
However, Magistrate Ramroop did not entertain the explanation and before handing down the sentence told Persaud, “you are stubborn, you have not learnt your lesson and now you are blaming it on Alcohol.”
“I have no alternative, but to impose the sentence sanctioned by law.”
The Magistrate issued a warning to those who may appear before him in assault and abuse matters.
He stated that many times people abuse alcohol which is one f the main causes of domestic violence, and its overuse, he added, will often lead to murder.
