Led by a corps of outriders from the Guyana Police Force, and attended by large groups from various communities around Georgetown and its environs, the ‘Big Ride’ organized by the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sports was staged yesterday afternoon and was eventually deemed a big success.
Led by Minister of Culture Youth and Sports, Frank Anthony and several other government officials, the riders were sent on their way at around 17:00hrs and from the onset were advised that the activity was not meant to be a race but basically one to create an awareness of the benefits that can be derived from daily exercise.
The group traveled west along the East Coast thoroughfare and culminated the journey in front of the old Guyana National Service Complex, Carifesta Avenue where the Minister delivered the keynote address. He told the gathering that even though the number of participants was not as many as was initially expected, the activity had reached the expectation of the planners.
“Rides like these are not only about attaining community benefits, it is about individual development,” Mr. Anthony told the gathering. He then implored the participants to dedicate at least 30 minutes per day engaged in exercises.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sports, Alfred King also added his voice to the cause. He commended the participants for foregoing their Sunday afternoon leisure activities to be a part of the ride. “This is a part of the vision of the Sports Ministry to create the atmosphere where citizens could engage in sports as evident by the numerous sports facilities that the Ministry has been resuscitating and refurbishing,” said Mr. King.
Other speakers included President of the Guyana Cycling Federation (GCF), Hector Edwards and Director of Youth and Sports, Neil Kumar.
At the end of the ride several entities received special prizes including Industry (the village with the most riders), the GCF (organization with most riders), the Ministry with the most riders (Ministry of Health), the primary school with most riders (Winfer Gardens Primary) and most uniformed group (Police Force). Kaden Conway of the Marian Academy won the prize for the youngest rider while 66 years old Frankie Archer copped the prize for the oldest rider.
