Local Football stalwart former National player and Coach Lennox Arthur commenting on Sunday’s one off International between Guyana’s ‘Golden Jaguars’ and T&T’s the Soca Warriors believes that although Earl O’ Neal’s 1977 Squad which was the last team to defeat the Twin Island Republic at the Senior level, the Ken Gibbs 1970 Squad was superior.
According to Arthur the 1970 Trinidad team was world class with players of the caliber of Bugs Haynes and Henry two of the Caribbean best strikers at the time, Wingers Leonard and Brewster, defender Aimery and the Murren Brothers.
Guyana drew both Internationals played at the Guyana Sports Club Ground Thomas Lands on October 8 and 10, 1970 goal scorers for Guyana were Lloyd King in Game 1 and Patrick Britton in Game 2.
The 1970 National Team that drew both games 1-1 with Trinidad & Tobago was: Ken Gibbs (Captain – Thomas United), Lloyd King (Thomas United), Gordon Forde (Thomas United-deceased), Michael Pierre (Thomas United), Desmond Morgan (Thomas United), Ovid Henry (Malteenoes), Michael Hampden (Malteenoes – Goalkeeper), Alvin Braithwaite (Malteenoes), Patrick Briton (Malteenoes), Simeon Andrews (GFC – deceased), Lennox Arthur (Santos), Cardo Williams (Santos), Clyde Browne (Santos), Eric Sutherland (Victoria – Goalkeeper), Winston Callender (GFC). .
The officials for the series were Referee: J. Lugar; Linesmen: Deryck Whitehead and P.S. Rodrigues
Lennox Arthur was outstanding in both games completely out foxing Trinidad defence maestros the Murren Brothers and left back Aimery.
