Police investigators hope that a strip of cloth will lead them to the person who robbed and then dragged bank employee Sheema Mangar to her death two weeks ago.
The material is of the same colour, and appears to be of the same texture, as the uniform that the 21-year-old was wearing when she was run over by a vehicle into which her attacker fled.
The cloth was found under a silver-grey car that police impounded last week after detaining two suspects.
Police Commissioner Henry Greene told reporters yesterday that forensic tests on the material will be conducted at the Force’s Forensic Laboratory.
“We found some material that seems to resemble the uniform of the girl…we put it in chemicals.”
Commissioner Greene said that the detained man has denied having any involvement in Mangar’s demise. However, according to Greene, police have received information that appears to implicate him.
“We are trying to get a witness who told us that this guy had hit the girl down and had the phone.”
The man and an associate were released on Tuesday, but investigators have kept possession of the car.
Police had also detained another man and impounded a silver-grey car that he drove.
Kaieteur News was told that a strand of hair was recovered from that vehicle, which was slightly dented.
However, Commissioner Greene said that no human remains have been recovered from any of the impounded vehicles.
Mangar, a Demerara Bank employee, was waiting for transportation near the junction of North Road and Camp Street when a man snatched her phone.
An eyewitness said that the man ran to Camp Street and entered a silver-grey car which was parked nearby.
Mangar pursued the thief and stood in front of the vehicle while demanding that he return her phone.
But the occupants crushed Mangar under the wheels of the car. She was dragged to Church and Camp Street.
Mangar succumbed the following day at the St. Joseph Mercy Hospital.
