Residents of East Bank Berbice are pleading with the relevant authorities to review the situation that leads to flooding during spring tides.
Almost the entire village of Light Town and Juliansburg, East Bank Berbice, experienced severe losses due to the flood.
One concerned resident, Reginald Cort, told Kaieteur News that a large a number of his poultry died as a result of the village being flood.
There were also reports of valuable household articles being damaged after flood water went into people’s homes.
A farmer in the Juliansburg area, Melville Phillips, said that he lost five acres of citrus plants to the flood that the area experienced.
Residents of the two villages claimed that they are being neglected and discriminated against because no one seems to care about the situation.
His son, Tony Phillips, told reporters that all of his crops that had reached the point of harvesting spoiled and his losses are in the millions.
A few months ago the said village was visited by representatives from the Drainage and Irrigation Department and promised to have engineers visit the area and assess the situation. To this date no one has visited.
The villagers are calling on the relevant Ministries to raise the sea defense in the said area to prevent further flooding.
