East Berbice residents were going to bed with their yards under several feet of water as the raging spring tide swamped most of New Amsterdam and all of the villages along East Bank Berbice.
New Amsterdam Market, for the first time, was under several inches of water. When vendors left the market earlier in the afternoon they never anticipated what was to follow. By 18:00 hrs the market was completely under water.
As the news spread the vendors were pouring back into the market to see what they could salvage. Vendors and residents alike suffered severe losses as the high tide raged.
Most of the equipment that was being mobilised to do construction work on East Bank Berbice were under as much as three feet of water. These pieces of equipment are owned by Nauth Construction.
Guyoil, Sol and a number of oil companies along the Berbice River as well as Guysuco also suffered tremendous losses.
