– collapses in prison
A city businessman who was yesterday jailed for four days after he failed to turn up in court on contempt charges, suffered a heart attack and was taken to the hospital.
Yesterday, Justice Franklyn Holder sentenced jeweller ‘Sheriff’ Ahmad, after he was arrested on the charges.
Ahmad was reportedly summoned to appear before the Judge on Monday in a contempt action brought by another businessman, Ashmeel Bacchus, over judgment handed down in July by another High Court judge.
Kaieteur News understands that Bacchus had taken Ahmad to the Commercial Court after he transacted business with the jeweller and was paid with a dishonored cheque said to be in the vicinity of $2.5M.
In July, Justice Rishi Persaud had ordered Ahmad to pay but he failed to do so.
Contempt charges were then filed by Bacchus’ lawyers, Anil Nandlall, Manoj Narayan and Euclin Gomes.
That matter was set to be heard on Monday but Ahmad failed to turn up.
Justice Holder reportedly then issued a bench warrant for the businessman and he was taken before the court yesterday where the four-day sentence was handed down.
Shortly after being taken to the Camp Street jail yesterday afternoon, Ahmad apparently suffered a heart attack and was taken to the Balwant Singh Hospital where he was said to be under guard and taking drips.
