Residents of Eccles’ ‘Backstreet’, East Bank Demerara, are calling for the authorities to act fast following what appeared to be a breach of the sea dam there which left several homes under water yesterday.
According to Komal Rampersaud, a resident of the area and councillor of the Eccles/Ramsburg Neighbourhood Democratic, he went to visit his mother yesterday and noticed at least a foot of water in the yard. The right bank of the Demerara River is located right behind the homes.
Residents, who said that the flooding has become a norm – with complaints to the authorities not seeing any results – disclosed that there is a catchment area right before the sea dam which has not been cleared for years now.
“I am not sure how any equipment can go there now. Additionally, one man is squatting on the sea dam, blocking the drain there. When you talk, he wants to fight,” one resident said.
Over the past months, the country has been battling spring tides and in some cases, breaches of the banks.
A few months ago, the Demerara River swelled its banks as a result of heavy rains, flooding several communities from Linden to the city.
Residents at Eccles yesterday said that earlier on, there were sounds of the water from the river gushing through what seemed like a breach.
“I lost several chickens and all my duck eggs are gone,” said Chevon Peterson, a resident of Backstreet, Eccles.
Yesterday, an official of the Sea and River Defence unit of the Ministry of Public Works said that they are aware of the ‘problem’.
