By Sean Devers
The Guyana Champions League Twenty/20 cricket team getting ready for their toughest assignment yet from next Sunday in South Africa next month continues to receive moral financial support from the overseas based Guyanese community.
The team, which won the Caribbean T/20 Championship last month in Trinidad with a pulsating one-wicket win with a ball to spare in the final against Barbados, to qualify to represent the West Indies in South Africa, are scheduled to depart Guyana on Monday and play their opening match against Royal Bangalore Challengers from 11:30hrs (local time) next Sunday.
Expressing great pride at their success in the regional T/20 competition and applauding Guyana’s qualifying for the prestigious Champions League, A group of United States based Guyanese businessmen have contributed just under a million Guyana dollars towards the team’s preparation.
Bhola Ramsundar, of Bhola Insurance & Travel Service, Kawal Totaram, Attorney-at-Law, Stanley Raj of Main Street Insurance, Ralph Tamesh, Bobby Raghunandan of Ranch Restaurant, Dupaul Singh of Singh Sporting Goods, Motie Shivtahal of M.S. Tax and Accounting, Sydney Mahadeo of Hibiscus Restaurant and Bar, Dr. Tilokie Deepoo, Michael Chin, Prem Manbodhe, Bill and Dindial, Jeff Chanchal, Rhidas Sonny Sanichar. Ed Ahmad, Real Estate Broker, Al Akbar, Attorney-at-Law and Insaf Ali combined to support the Guyanese cricketers.
They have expressed confidence in the ability of Guyana cricketers and are optimistic that the team will let the Golden Arrowhead flutter proudly in South Africa and intend to follow every moment of the team’s progress in Africa.
Several overseas-based Guyanese, including ardent cricket fan Dave Narine of West Indian Groceries in New York, have pledged financial support to the Ramnaresh Sarwan led side while the Guyana Government has pumped $20 million into the team’s effort as its sponsor.
Guyana will play four preliminary games in South Africa as they hope to advance to the ‘final four’ of the 10 team competition which has been divided into two zones with the top two teams from each zone advancing to the semis.
