In a hectic battle for championship honours, Stabroek Market trounced Mahdia Market 2-0 on penalty kicks and was duly declared winner when the curtains came down on the Stabroek Warriors Sports 5th Annual 5 a-side Futsal Football tournament at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) Tuesday evening.
Earlier in the night, Bourda Market defeated Mocha Market 3-0 to take the honours in the third place playoff while the exhibition match between Charlotte Street and Charlestown ended successfully for the former team 2-1. Fans were also treated to an action packed exhibition affair between a Georgetown mixed team and one from Brazil. The former team eventually prevailed 3-2.
Representing Mahdia, Max Ramos made the breakthrough for his team with an incisive shot that had goal written all over it from the time the ball left his boot. This player starred once again in another attack but only this time the ball cannoned past the left side of the goal. As the seconds to the first half wound down, Stabroek generated renewed energy and Gerald Whittington broke loose to register the crucial equalizer shortly before the whistle sounded.
The fire of the first half developed into a raging inferno in the second as both teams attempted to distinguish themselves from the other. Both sides were guilty of blundering opportunities and at the end of regulation time the score remained at 1-1 forcing play in the extra time period. The teams remained deadlocked at the end of this segment forcing penalty kicks which ended in Stabroek Market’s favour.
For their efforts, the winners took home $200,000 and a trophy donated by Banks DIH Ltd while Mahdia won $150,000 and a trophy.
The third place duel was just as action packed with both teams demonstrating remarkable determination and resilience. Troy Herdsmanstein opened his team’s account with a scorcher during the early exchanges. With the opposition still ruffled by such aggression Herdmanstein struck again sending Bourda ahead by 2 goals.
Anthony Abrams then stitched in a humdinger on the whistle to narrow his team’s deficit to one goal.
An intense battle erupted in the second half with both teams attempting to seize the initiative. It was intense action with both goalkeepers effecting beautiful saves that really inspired the small but vocal crowd. Shortly before the culmination of regular time Terrence Adams slammed in the fourth goal of the match and the third for his team to seal the deal. Charlestown eventually carted off the third place winnings of $100,000 while the opposition earned $50,000.
